The first time I took my cat Seno to the vet, it was because someone had beaten him, and his mouth was bleeding a lot. On the way to the vet, Seno escaped from the box. He told me to wait at the other end of the sewer while he hosed water into it to spook my cat into coming out. Three other security guards stationed themselves around the opening of the sewer, ready to catch Seno when he came out. After a few pitiful miaows, he finally emerged. I held him tight in my arms; he was soaking wet and still bleeding, but at least I did not lose him. Everybody burst into cheers.

We understand the noble idea behind all these concepts, but if we can't reach the aim, why bother changing at all?

The nose of most conventional airplanes is round, while F117A's is flat. Why does the flat shape matter in the F117A ability to avoid radar signals? Radar works by spreading signals into the air, just like when you shout into a well. The sound traveling down the well will go back up to where it started. Why? Because the sound coming from your mouth will hit the wall of the well and the wall will send it back. Just like the well, the round shape of an airplane is very effective in reflecting the radar signals. This situation surely doesn't work for the F117A. The flat shape of the F117A enables radar signals to be deflected to any angle of direction except back to the radar.

Absorb and Be Invisible
The flat shape of the F117A doesn't guarantee that it's always undetectable by the enemy's radar. When it turns at less than 70 degrees, it can be detected by radar like other conventional aircrafts. However, the F117A is equipped with RAM (Radar Absorbent Material). RAM, which can only be installed in an aircraft made of titanium like the F117A, works to absorb radar signals.

Hey Guys! So... college days are just around the corner. For freshmen, orientation day is probably the most anticipated moment. Will it be nightmarish? Or will it be really nice? Well, either way, it will be quite a new experience, right? Why we don't we learn and get prepared?

On my second day of orientation, I was late! As if being late was not enough, I accidentally stepped on the foot of one of the seniors. Naturally, I was punished. I had to sing 'Balonku' song in front of hundreds of my comrades and plead for forgiveness from the offended senior. What a terrible day! (Dessy ratnasari)

Tongkonan
A Tongkonan is traditional house in Toraja. The most interesting feature of the house is its roof that resembles a boat. According to a Trojan myth, the ancestors of the Toraja people came by boat from the north, from the Mekong Delta in China. Another legend has it that their ancestors, who came in boats, were caught by a terrible storm that damaged their vessels. So they used the boats as roof for their houses. As a sign of respect to their ancestors, the Torajan Tongkonan faces north.

Wooden figures placed on high stone walls in Tanah Toraja are called Tau-Tau. Many people thought that a Tau-tau, a Torajan effigy (a human statue made of wood), is a representation of a dead aspect. The wrong assumption also originates from the present style of the effigy, whose face resembles the dead person's. This new style is highly criticized by the older generation of Tau-Tau makers. For them, such style has made the tradition lose its sacred meaning. In truth, a Tau-Tau represents life cycle, not the dead phase, of an ancestral figure because the soul of the dead person has turned into a good like ancestor incorporated in the efigy. The Torajan believe in a continuous life cycle, including life after death. So, when a living relative of a Tau-Tau wants to give offering to the dead, the relative simply puts the offering on the palms of the effigy.

Dayak people begin this practice in infancy, adding one metal ring or bead each year. So a woman with 60 belahongs dangling from her ears means to show she's 60 years old. Some people believe that Dayak people elongate their earlobes also for self discipline. It certainly takes a great deal of patience and endurance to wear heavy belahongs for the rest of one's life.

Baku Pukul Manyapu
This is a tradition from the villages of Mamala and Morela in Ambon. Seven days after Idul Fitri, youths from neighboring villages whip each other with brooms made from sago ribs in front of the Mamala and Morela Mosques. They lash each other until their bodies are bruised and cut open. But the most fascinating aspect of this seemingly barbaric spectacle is that all the wounds won't leave a single scar on the skin. A special ointment (minyak Mamala) is smeared on the wounds to heal them. In a couple of days, the wounds perfectly heal. While many tourists who watch the ritual think that the attraction only shows the amazing nature of the ointment, the locals think that the whole ritual has a patriotic and religious significance. It signifies the struggle of native heroes who defended the Kapahaha fort from the Dutch. It also represents a local story about a man who had an insight through a dream into solving the construction problem in a mosque. A beam had broken in the mosque. From his dream, the man learned how to restore the beam by smearing an ointment made from coconut and spices. As it worked for the broken beam, the ointment was then also used for wounded men.

Saucer Dance

Arriving home from work, I felt very tired. I had just hung my jacket on a hanger and was taking a rest when I remembered that I had to call one of my friends. I looked for my cellphone, but I couldn't find it. I asked everyone in the house whether they saw my cellphone, but no one did it. Well, I lost it, I thought. Then my brother tried to call my cellphone. To our surprise, we heard it ringing in my jacket! My cellphone was there. ( Tukul Arwana )

I work in a mobile phone store. To perfectly promote the cellphone cum camera that we sell, I took pictures of myself each with a different camera, developed them, and put them in the shop's display next to the respective cellphones. So the costumers could see at once the quality of pictures taken with each camera. But one day came a naughty customer who asked, "If I buy this camera, can I get the girl in the sample picture as a present?"

My boyfriend and I bought some toasted bread one day and went home on his motorcycle. Since I didn't have my handbag with me, I put my black cellphone in the black plastic bag that I got from the toast seller. When we went over a road bump, suddenly the plastic bag slipped from my fingers and fell on the street. My boyfriend decided to stop and pick up the plastic bag, but before we did so, two men on their bike gave me my plastic bag. They instantly left again after I thanked them. When I checked the plastic bag, I was shocked to find only the toast and no cellphone. Then I asked my boyfriend to call my cellphone, but the men who had taken it didn't want to give it back to me. It started when an SMS came in from a girl who thought that I was her brother. When I told her that I was not, she got angry and accused me of playing tricks on her. She even threatened that she would sue me. So I explained to her that I really was not her brother and she dialed a wrong number. Then we got acquainted and continued texting and calling each other from then on. We became boyfriend and girlfriend even though I was in Jakarta and she was in Surabaya. So from the time that we became acquainted and then became a couple for one year until we broke up, we'd never met face to face. ALl the things were done via cellphone! ( Choky Sitohang )

I just bought a 3G hand phone and showed it off to my mom. We were sitting and talking about my brand new phone on the porch of my house when my boyfriend stopped by. You'll lose some weight after consistently being on this low calorie diet for 2-3 months.

The Philippines

I bet you've heard of the Japanese tea ceremony, Cha-no-yu, before. It's a traditional ceremony originating from China and perfected by Master Sen-no-Rikyu in the 16th century. The essence of this ceremony is harmony, the harmony of nature, serenity, simplicity, and beauty.
There are some styles of carrying out this ceremony, but the main idea is the same. Let me tell you about the simplest style.
First the guest enters the room and kneels down on a tatami (mat). Then, he/she will be served very sweet Japanese traditional snacks. After that, the host will enter the room and make the tea using special utensils. When the tea is ready, the host will bow and give the chawan (bowl) of tea to the guest. Then the guest will bow, too, receive the chawan with the right hand, place it on the palm of the left hand, and rotate the chawan clockwise three times with the right hand. After the last sip, the guest has to wipe the part of the chawan, which has been touched by the lips, with the right hand, and rotate the chawan counterclockwise, then return it to the host.
Mercifully, it's not necessary to do this kind of ceremony every time a Japanese wants to have tea or to serve tea to his/her guests. They can just have tea like people in other countries do.

Sweden
Swedes drink lots of coffee; in fact, Sweden is the largest coffee drinking nation in the world. It's the largest one in the world? yes!
They drink coffee, usually strong and black, pretty much the whole day; they have morning coffee, coffee break, coffee for launch and dinner time, and every time they have guests.
For special occasions, Swedes drink alcoholic beverages like cognac, Aquavit, or punch with coffee, either in separate glasses or just mixed with the coffee. Ramadhan in Australia
We live near the UNSW campus in Kingford area, New South Wales, Australia. This area is known as the area where Asian students, including Indonesian students, live. Therefore, we have a lot of Moslem neighbors. There are also a lot of kelompok Pengajian and Taman Pendidikan Al-Quran (TPA). During Ramadhan, these groups coordinate buka puasa and shalat tarawih bersama once a week, usually on weekends.
On these occasions, usually mothers coordinate the various dishes, the young people provide rice and the fathers provide fruits and drinks. The menu consists of Indonesian traditional food and cakes. On the day of the event, we invite a speaker to give a sermon. Sometimes we also attend Buka Puasa bersama at the Indonesian consulate. We always look forward to these occasions because then we can satisfy our longing for home.
The Indonesian foundation in Australia creates Lebaran cards that we can buy and send to our family in Indonesia. The most popular ones are the ones with the picture of Sidney Opera House and Harbor Bridge, cause they depict our whereabouts. Several days before Eid al Fitr, we collect Money for zakat Fitrah to be sent to Indonesia and poor Moslem countries.

On eid al Fitr, we go to the UNSW campus to attend the Eid Pray. The sermon is conducted in English, because it is also attended by students from other countries such as Bangladesh, Egypt, Pakistan, Malaysia and Singapore. After praying, we shake each other's hand, ask for forgiveness and take pictures. After that, we visit friends who hold open-house celebrations in their apartments and the conssulate for silaturahim.
It is great to experience Ramadhan in Australia. true, there are no firecrackers nor meriam sundut explosions. There is no adzan from the mosque to wake us for sahur either. But here, we try to preserve our ukhuwah and tauhid between us. And what's more, we feel like are one big family!

Marhaban ya Ramadhan! Without our realizing it, the fasting month is upon us once again. As the month of sin burning, Ramadhan is eagerly awaited by Moslem all around the world. In Indonesia, Moslems have their own unique tradition in carrying out the fasting and in celebrating Eid al Fitr (Idul Fitri). How about in other countries? We asks some Indonesian students, who are studying in USA and Australia about the fasting month and Eid al Fitr in those countries. Here are the stories.

Breaking My Fast with Goat Milk
I live in Denver, USA. At this time of year, it is winter, so the days are shorter then nights. On average, we start our fast at 5AM and finish it at 4:50 PM. Of course it is different for other time zone (USA is divided by 4 time zones). But the differences are not very significant, regardless of where you live.
When it's time to break our fast, we go to the mosque to do it with others and pray tarawih together. Because most of the Moslems here are Arabs, they are usually the ones who coordinate the occasion. They serve goat milk (Yuck) and goat rice (or Nasi Kebuli in Indonesia).
On Eid al Fitr, we go to the mosque to attend Eid pray. There are a lot of Moslem living in USA. So, at this time, when the mosque is full, some of us have to pray in the parking lot! For the same reason, the pray is conducted twice or three times. The first one is conducted at 7:30 and the second one usually at 9 or 9:30.
Usually, Indonesians who have a family (and have a house) take the initiative to have an open house celebration. They make Ketupat, Gulai, and other Indonesian traditional food. Permias (Indonesian Student Association) also usually holds a halal bihalal for all school areas per state. And they yearly rotate the host of Lebaran.

Going to Campus

Sometimes, going to campus can be real pain. Not because of the lecturer or the subject, but because we have to prepare so many things upfront. There are the heavy, thick textbooks, the many pages of copied materials, the assignments, and many more. But there's always one thing for each of us that we eill never leave behind, and it may not always be the same thing. Here are some of the most interesting answers from the real campus goers.

Wallet. My wallet has so many functions. All of my ID cards are in it and so is my money. You can't really do anything without those, right? But most importantly, it is where I keep my girlfriend's photo. I can easily look at the photo every time I'm bored or need a little pick-me-up. Man! It absolutely boosts my energy and spirit! Handphone. It's just the must-bring thingy everywhere I go, especially to campus. I can easily call or send text messages my parents (or anyone else) when necessary. (Chelsea Oktaviani)

Ask: I've been wondering about studying abroad for quite some time. How do I choose the best university for a specific program? Are the universities graded? is it different in each country?
advice : Actually, there are no official ranks of universities decided by the host government. But usually each country has an independent agency to monitor and review the universities. There are many aspects involved in ranking universities, such as acceptance rate, research funding, and graduate's first salary. Different countries have different groupings, for example:
- Group of Eight (Australia)
- The Ivy League (USA)
- Top 50 (UK)
But it's wise not to choose a university based on ranking alone. You should also consider other factors such as class size, tuition fee, distance, culture, safety, etc.
Remember: ranking can be used to inform you about the universities, but they won't provide an easy answer.

Ask: A friend of mine is studying abroad now, and he said he received a grant for his studies. what's the difference between a grant and a scholarship?
answer and suggestion: I the education world, grants and scholarship have a similar meaning. Sometimes you will also hear the term funding, contribution, or award. Scholarship is given on the basis of exellent academic grades, applicant's potentials, etc. A student can get full or partial scholarship. Or he can get a tuition grant-a discount out of the total tuition fee. But usually, scholarship and grants are given for Master's students.

Lawang Sewu : A Paradise for photographers
At first impression, this old building looks spooky. But as you enter the building, you'll think of it either as even spookier or as an impressive ancient construction. What with its countless doors (thus the name Lawang Sewu; meaning Thousand Doors in Javanese), which allow little light to penetrate the ex-administrative building in colonial times, the twilight impression creates a perfect haven for avid photographers. Usually, a black and white picture of Lawang Sewu is what they're after. But there are more things to fascinate them: three colossal stained glass windows, the landing of a gigantic staircase in the hall. They are dazzling!

Chinese Temples: The Oriental Legacies
Semarang is a melting pot where you can find Javanese culture mixed with those of Arabic, Indian, and of course, Chinese. Abundant Chinese temples testify to the latter influence. Most of them are located in Pecinan or China Town. But the most famous duo are Tay Kak Sie Temple and Sam Poo Kong Temple. Don't ever leave Semarang without visiting Sam Poo Kong Temple Gedung Batu. This Chinese shrine has lately undergone and extensive renovation. And the new structure looks magnificent! The place of worship, built in honor to the world celebrated Muslim Sailor, Ceng Ho, seems to welcome visitors with its gold and red colors, not to mention the brilliant Chinese Lanterns surrounding it.

Kota Lama: A Souvenir from the Colonial Era
If you come from Jakarta, I am sure you are familiar with a place called Kota or Beos. It's an old section of the capital city that still reflects the Dutch heritage with its old buildings and a city square. What other city can proudly boasts of its wtill well preserved colonial heritage? Right ... Semarang! Kota Lama or Outstadt (outer town in Dutch) truly reflects its name. It's both old and seemingly separated from the rest of the city. Of course you can enjoy the view of many old buildings there, but the primadona is Gereja Blenduk. The Oldest Christian church in Central Java stands out for its huge copper dome. Its 18th century hexagonal walls house a Greek cross and a Baroque style pipe organ. The Kota Lama area, just like many parts of Semarang, suffers from regular floods that continually destroy the asphalt roads: so, the government decided to pave the whole area. As a result, Outstadt looks even quainter.

Actually, there are many more things that you can enjoy in Semarang. But with the knowledge of the splendor of the city that you've just read about, hopefully you will have a different experience next time you revisit the place.

The Art of Being an Art Director

Requirements
First of all, who could be an art director ? Basically anyone. One doesn't have to have a specific educational background to work as an art director. Nevertheless, a degree in graphic design or working experience in an advertising agency is a plus. But of course, since art director will be working in a creative environment, he or she is required to have a strong sense of art.
Another requirement for being an art director is the ability to direct a photo session and to perceive the right angle for the picture. And although it is not not a must, an art director had better master graphic computer programs. Usually, after a copy writer or graphic designer has finished a concept for a product advertisement and has given it to the art director, the art director then presents the concept to the prospective costumer. Thus, presentation skills are necessary. These skills include the ability to communicate with the client and to graciously accept any remarks about the concept, be it positive or negative.

The Job Itself
An Art Director works closely together with a copy writer to make the concept of an advertisement. This concept is proposed by the account director and creative director for development. Before developing the concept, they gather as much information as possible about the product through qualitative or quantitative researches such as conducting interviews, FGD ( Focus Group Discussion ) or door to door questionnaires. After the concept is approved, the art director and copy writer create a storyline for radio, print and TVC ( TV Commercial ). If the storyline is OK, it will be made into a story board. The story board is given to a production house to be changed into a director board or shooting board. Based on this, the Production House ( PH ) then coordinates a photo session or an ad shooting. During the shooting of the ad, the art director makes sure that it is still in line with the director board. An Art Director can start his/her career as a computer operator or a junior art director. It's Fun, art director also have to be highly mobile, can meet a lot of people (even celebrities) and travel to a lot of places. Art Director is to make the client accept the concept. History of Palembang

Palembang a City by a River

Palembang is a city on Sumatra Island that is divided into two by the Musi River, the Ulu side and the Ilir side. This geographical situation has made water transportation system a part of the people's daily life. Along both banks of the Musi there used to be moored raft dwellings, called Rakit, some of which served as shops. The houses along the banks stand facing the water and are built on stilts. Because of its orientation towards the river, the city has an elongated profile along both sides and does not stretch far inland.

This venice of the East located on important trade artery between India and China since ancient times has determined the character of Palembang as a port city. Now the two sides of the city are connected by one big bridge, AMPERA, which is short for Amanat Penderitaan Rakyat.
Visiting Palembang means that you can pamper yourself with the delicious fishcake Pempek, as you can find this kind of food everywhere, from street vendors to fancy restaurants. You can also see what remains from the glorious Sri Wijaya Kingdom in Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum located on the side of the Musi River. Near the Museum, you can see a building called Benteng Kuto Besak, which used to be the residence of the Sri Vijaya kings in the 18th century. From the Museum area, continue your walking trip to Mesjid Agung. an architectural proof of the acculturation of Chinese, native Palembang and modern cultures in a harmonious way. Built in 1738, this greatest mosque in Indonesia of that time has continually been rebuilt and renovated. The last renovation in the year 2000 has given the touch of the 21th century style to this unique mosque.

One thing that you shouldn't miss when visiting Palembang is seeing people weaving Songket, the traditional Palembang's sarong. Take a becak ride to Jl. Ki Gede Ing Suro, on the way, you can see several Palembang's traditional houses, limas houses, with their unique roof shape. You can ask your becak driver to wait for you while you are browsing around the weaving houses along the street. You can also buy a sarong that you fancy. When you bargain for the desired item, bear in mind that one sarong needs one full month to finish.

Bird Watching

what's so exciting about bird watching ? "well, we go around places pretty often! So we don't only watch birds and do a survey on them," says Mikel, a birdwatcher and a member of PINGUIN, an organization for birdwatching hobbyists, founded by students of Biology. But everyone who is interested in Bird watching, not only students.

Watching birds is no less thrilling than other activities. If you like watching birds on Discovery channel and know how they migrate, now you can really see it with your own eyes! You can witness groups of birds migrate from north to south. This migration usually happens in the month of November.
Isn't exciting ? And if you often see wonderful pictures of birds in the Magazine National Geographic, well, you can take pictures of birds for your own collection !

if you wanna go bird watching, all you need to have is a pair of binoculars or a monocular, a guide book on birds, and writing stuff to record what you see. Oh, and a camera if you want to take pictures ! No Special outfit is necessary, just wear whatever outfit you are comfortable in, because bird watching might take some time. But when you go birdwatching in a forest, it's recommended that you have a compass, a whistle, and enough water for you too drink. And always inform your folks or siblings where you are going and when you are expected to be back.

Star Gazing

Of course you can only do it at night, and better with no lights around, because the STARS would then be easier to see, that is, and assuming that the weather is clear. WHY ? Because from earth, stars look like small flames, and with lights around us, those flames fade.
" NOvember and December " skies display a breathtaking spectacle that we shouldn't miss. We can watch the stars best from 2-4 AM, when rhe northern sky puts on show these beautiful objects which are then visible to the naked eye.
So Star Gazing can always be done without special tools. Be awake early in the morning while the sky is clear and full of stars. Put on our jacket, go to the backyard, turn off the lights around, and watch a superb show in the giant dome, the sky.
There are three episodes of the show: The Bull, the Hunter, then the Lion accompanied by the Great Bear. Taurus, the Bull, is notable for the Hyades ( a V-shape cluster of stars, imagined as the Bull's head ) with Aldebaran ( reminds us of the gorgeous male model, doesn't it ? ) One of the brightest stars, as they eye of the Bull. Aldebaran, follower in Arabic, always follows Pleiades, the other Taurus cluster.

Orion, the Hunter ( WALUKU in INDONESIA ), has bright stars of various colors; orange, pale blue, and bright blue. Orion is famous for the Great Orion Nebula, a cloud of dust and gas that looks like fuzzy stars.

The Lion, Leo constellation, is not easy to spot. it looks more like a sickle. This Lion is always accompanied by the great Bear Ursa Mayor, which is one of the biggest constellations.
so, if you are interested, you must have telescopes to see the stars. or join at Himpunan Astronom Amatir ! it currently has about 400 members, and this organization helps you learn and get to know more about the stars, the sun, the moon, in short, the science that's called ASTRONOMY.

Paragliding is one of the aero sports using elliptical parachutes called gliders. In Indonesia, together with hang gliding (gantole in Indonesian, this sport is organized by Persatuan Layang Gantung Indonesia (PLGI). David A. teak, a tandem master and one of the paragliding pioneers in Indonesia, gives us all we want to know about paragliding.

Yes, Paragliding is one of the extreme sports. Compared with the aero sports, paragliding is the cheapest. If you have a glider, that's the equipment for Paragliding, you can do it for free ! Isn't that cool ?

if you want to rent a glider, with RP 75,000 you can rent it the whole day long. As for the outfit, you don't have to wear a special outfit. A pair of jeans or a training suit, ankle protecting shoes, gloves and a helmet is all you need. But the thing is, you have to be a pilot to fly. Yes, the person who paraglides is called a pilot ( sounds cool, huh ? ) What to do to be a pilot ?

First, you have to go through a basic training which takes 4 meetings, costing RP 1.8 million which includes the rent of the equipment. But for Rp 4 million you get the basic training and another 4 meeting training to get a pilot license. A license is necessary for you to go paragliding in other places, or even other countries. Unless you have a license, you can't fly solo. As a student pilot, you don't have a license just yet, but you will get a pasport. In this sport, you have to keep a logbook, that is the note to see how often you have flown. With this logbook, you can get to the higher rank of pilot.
You don't have to have a license if you only want to get a bird eye view and get a sense of flying. You can always do it in tandem, fly with a tandem master. Flying Tandem costs Rp 200,000 and if the weather is good, you can enjoy it up two hours !
